Starting an Exercise Program 2/2

Have you ever thought about beginning an exercise routine, but didn’t know how to start or see it through? This usually happens if you do not first determine WHY you want to begin an exercise program and HOW badly you want to continue an exercise program. When you are ready to begin the physical process of exercising, start by assessing your current level of fitness.

First, establish a starting reference point to which you can measure your progress.  This is done by assessing your aerobic/muscular fitness, flexibility, and body composition, consider measuring:

  • Heart rate before and immediately after walking 1 mile

  • How long  takes to walk 1 mile, or run 1.5 miles

  • How many pushups you can do

  • How far you can reach forward while seated on the floor with your legs in front of you

  • Your waist circumference, just above your hip bones

Next, you will want to consider your fitness goals (i.e., weight loss, improved strength, being able to run a marathon) and start with a balanced routine that will help you achieve them.  A balanced routine should include a variety of exercises that help improve your strength, endurance, and flexibility.  Start with small amounts of exercise that are spread out through the course of a week (i.e. fitness challenges).  Above all, this routine should be SOMETHING YOU ENJOY!

If all of this information regarding the basics of starting an exercise program seems challenging or even overwhelming, we can help you discover your own individual reasons for beginning a program and create a customized routine that’s challenging, yet FUN, that’s specific for you!
